Palmdale, CA
a place to call home
Named one of the fastest-growing cities in America, the City of Palmdale has enjoyed tremendous growth and prosperity over the last decade. The more than 155,000 residents who call Palmdale home enjoy a pleasing quality of life in this family-oriented community.
Palmdale is a Charter City governed under the council/manager form of local government. The mayor is elected every two years for a two-year term. Also every two years, two of the four councilmembers are elected to serve four-year terms.
In December 13 2018, marked the end of an era for Palmdale, as Jim Ledford, mayor for 26 years, passed those duties on to newly elected Mayor Steve Hofbauer. Ledford was recognized for his achievement as the Palmdale’s longest-tenured elected mayor with a total of 32 years in the City Government. City Manager James Purtee presented Ledford with a plaque in recognition of his service to the city, including as a council member and planning commissioner.
Hofbauer and reelected council members Juan Carrillo and Laura Bettencourt all took the oath of office at the start of the council meeting, administered by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Lisa Chung.
Hofbauer, who has served as a council member since 2005 and as a planning commissioner for 13 years before that, won election to the at-large mayor’s seat over Ledford and challenger V. Jesse Smith, co-founder of the Community Action League.
